About Facility
Corporate headquarters
Jungbunzlauer’s Port Colborne plant, located in Ontario, Canada, is a key site in the company’s global network for the production of citric acid via microbial fermentation. Utilizing corn-derived glucose as a renewable feedstock, the facility employs submerged fermentation in 400 m³ tanks to cultivate citric acid-producing microorganisms under tightly controlled conditions.
The downstream recovery process includes calcium citrate precipitation followed by carbon treatment to ensure high purity and consistency across batches. With an annual production capacity of 140,000 metric tons, the plant serves food, pharmaceutical, and industrial markets, delivering to stringent quality and safety standards under GMP+ certification.
In line with Jungbunzlauer’s commitment to environmental responsibility, the Port Colborne site operates a biomass-fired steam boiler, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering process emissions. Furthermore, the plant provides lot-level CO₂ intensity disclosures, supporting customer efforts to track and reduce the carbon footprint of their supply chains.
