Standard Owner Benchmark - GreenBlue

By CommonShare

GreenBlue is an environmental nonprofit dedicated to empowering a diversity of stakeholders to promote a more sustainable materials economy. Through our vision, mission, and work, we promote transparency, provide design evaluation tools, guide post-use material communication, create conference-based and classroom-based educational opportunities, engage trade associations and government agencies, and offer consulting services all across the sustainable packaging supply chain.

GreenBlue’s Current Projects Include:

The Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC):

Under the GreenBlue parent company, the Sustainable Packaging Coalition is a membership-based collaborative that believes in the power of industry to make packaging more sustainable. As the leading voice on sustainable packaging, we are passionate about creating packaging that is good for people and good for the environment. Our mission is to bring sustainable packaging stakeholders together to catalyze actionable improvements to packaging systems and lend an authoritative voice on issues related to packaging sustainability.

How2Recycle:

How2Recycle® is a standardized labeling system that clearly communicates disposal instructions to the public. The program involves a coalition of forward-thinking brands who want their packaging to be recycled and are empowering consumers through smart packaging labels. How2Recycle is currently the only nationally recognized recycling labeling system in North America.

How2Compost:

An extension of the How2Recycle label program, How2Compost is an on-package label that lets consumers know if a package is BPI-certified. The label also includes a helpful URL directing consumers to more information about composting correctly.

Navigate:

GreenBlue Navigate is the newest offering for members of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition. While this service will be available as a member benefit, there will be an additional fee. Beginning with Strategy, Support and Engagement, our group of Navigate Advisors, comprised of industry thought leaders, will provide needed expertise in these key areas to drive your sustainability goals forward:

Recycled Material Standard (RMS):

The Recycled Material Standard (RMS) enables participating brands and suppliers to celebrate their sustainability efforts that collectively advance the use of recycled materials. The standard establishes requirements necessary to assure accuracy and transparency of claims with the support of a robust third-party certification system.

Cleangredients:

CleanGredients, under GreenBlue, has partnered with the EPA Safer Choice program since we launched in 2006. Safer Choice was developed to make it easier for consumers and commercial buyers to identify products with safer chemical ingredients. Ingredients listed in CleanGredients are evaluated against standards set by Safer Choice, ensuring they can be used by formulators in products meeting the Safer Choice criteria. By simplifying the Safer Choice certification process, we enable our subscribers to bring safer and more sustainable products to the market.

Cleanpackage:

Cleanpackage supports safe + circular materials for packaging. Regulations and restricted substance lists (RSLs) indicate what not to use in packaging, but what should companies use instead? Without robust, comprehensive data, everyone in the value chain is vulnerable to regrettable substitutions. To accelerate the adoption of safer chemistry and improved feedstocks for circularity, CleanPackage was created as a registry of assessed and verified materials by trade name. CleanPackage is a project of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition created in partnership with ChemFORWARD, with the goal of accelerating the availability and adoption of safer alternative building block materials for packaging. Through its work, GreenBlue aims to foster collaboration and drive systemic change towards more sustainable materials management and a circular economy. As a non-profit organization, GreenBlue operates with the objective of advancing environmental sustainability and creating positive social impact rather than generating profits for private interests.
