BANANATEX®
Bananatex® is a revolutionary fabric that is not only durable and technical but also biodegradable and free from plastic. It is made exclusively from Abacá banana plants. These plants are grown in a permaculture environment in the mid- and highlands of the Philippines, where they thrive without the need for pesticides, fertilizer, or excessive water. The cultivation of Abacá banana plants has played a significant role in reforesting areas that were previously cleared for logging, promoting biodiversity and benefiting local farmers economically. Additionally, the production of Bananatex® in agroforestry projects generates carbon credits to help combat climate change.
An outstanding feature of Bananatex® is its ability to be composted, closing the natural product cycle loop by returning the fabric to the soil from which it originated (EN 13432 and ISO 14851). Since its introduction in October 2018, Bananatex® has been recognized with several international sustainability and design awards. Notably, it has achieved the prestigious Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold certification, the highest global standard for products that are safe, circular, and responsibly made. QWSTION, a Swiss bag brand known for innovation, collaborated with a yarn specialist and a weaving partner in Taiwan to develop this remarkable fabric.
