Emicode

Emicode is a certification and labeling system for building materials and products, particularly focusing on the emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It was developed by the GEV (Gemeinschaft Emissionskontrollierte Verlegewerkstoffe, Klebstoffe und Bauprodukte e.V.), a non-profit organization based in Germany.

The Emicode system aims to assess and communicate the level of emissions from building products, such as adhesives, flooring, and insulation materials, and to promote healthier indoor environments. It provides a reliable and transparent framework for evaluating and categorizing products based on their emissions of VOCs, which are known to have potential health impacts and contribute to indoor air pollution.

To obtain Emicode certification, manufacturers voluntarily submit their products for testing and evaluation by accredited laboratories. The emissions testing follows specific guidelines and methods, including chamber testing and analysis of emitted substances. The results are then compared to predetermined limit values set by Emicode.

Emicode offers three levels of certification: Emicode EC1, Emicode EC1 Plus, and Emicode EC1 R Plus. The EC1 level indicates low emissions, EC1 Plus represents very low emissions, and EC1 R Plus signifies products with exceptionally low emissions. The certification is based on stringent requirements and is recognized internationally as a reliable indicator of low-emitting building materials.
