GREEN COUNCIL (GC)

The Green Council (GC) is a non-profit, non-partisan, and tax-exempt charitable organization based in Hong Kong. It was established in 2000 by a group of individuals from various industries and academia who shared a vision of transforming Hong Kong into a world-class green city. The primary objective of the Green Council is to promote environmental stewardship by encouraging the integration of environmental protection practices into the management and production processes of the industrial and commercial sectors.

With the motto "Conservation begins with Education," the Green Council is dedicated to providing ongoing education and training on sustainable procurement, environmental management, waste management, energy conservation, and related topics. Their funding primarily comes from membership fees, public donations, and sponsorships from corporations and individuals who share their vision. In certain cases, they also apply for funding from government sources for specific projects.

The Green Council focuses on three primary objectives:

Raising public awareness about the importance of environmental conservation. Encouraging and enhancing the environmental management and performance of local industries. Promoting Hong Kong's image as a city that prioritizes environmental protection. The organization has implemented several key initiatives:

-Hong Kong Green Label Scheme: The Green Council established this scheme to provide consumers with a recognized standard for identifying environmentally friendly products and services. -Hong Kong Green Awards and Sustainable Procurement Charter: These initiatives aim to raise awareness and promote the use of green purchasing practices, thereby reducing and avoiding adverse environmental impacts. -Educational Activities: The Green Council collaborates with educational institutions and experts to organize talks, seminars, forums, and symposiums, enabling the sharing of valuable experiences and knowledge in relevant fields. -Environmental Events: The Green Council coordinates events such as the Green Carnival, Eco-model Tournament, Hong Kong Green Day, International Coastal Cleanup Hong Kong, and Green Run, all aimed at promoting environmental education.

Through these initiatives, the Green Council strives to engage the public, businesses, and the wider community in environmental conservation efforts, while also positioning Hong Kong as a city committed to environmental protection.
