North Technology Group
Established in 1957 by Lowell North, North Sails has risen to become the global leader in sailmaking. What started as a unique approach focused on science-based sailmaking has evolved into a transformative force within the industry. In 1960, North Sails recognized the potential of polyester Dacron as a superior alternative to cotton, enabling the creation of repeatable and predictable sail shapes. This marked a revolution in mid-century sailmaking, much like the groundbreaking impact of 3Di technology today.
One of Lowell's early experiments involved testing various types of Dacron for durability. Using a makeshift flutter testing method, he gained valuable insights into warp and weave, leading to the development of North Cloth, the company's proprietary sail material producer. Presently, the North manufacturing team rigorously tests every batch of woven or laminated sailcloth, employing proprietary processes and equipment to ensure optimal performance and durability.
Under Lowell North's leadership, the company achieved numerous firsts during his 27-year presidency. These milestones included pioneering the use of patterns, computers, cutting machines, and software for sail design analysis and stress measurement. As North Sails expanded, it gained a reputation for delivering fast and repeatable designs, earning victories in prestigious events like the Olympics, Star Worlds, and the America's Cup. The company's products also came to dominate long-distance racing fleets, exemplified by their success in the 1981-82 Whitbread Round the World Race (now The Ocean Race).
In 1987, Tom Whidden assumed the role of CEO, and true to the company's culture of innovation, he embraced a patented sail molding process that would redefine sail manufacturing. Recognizing the opportunity to combine sail and sailcloth production, Whidden championed what would become 3DL, evolving into the groundbreaking 3Di technology that solidified North Sails as the global leader in sailmaking.
The outstanding performance of North Sails was highlighted when Thomas Coville shattered the solo around-the-world record in 2016. He praised North Sails as a trusted partner, not only for believing in him during his journey, but also for the trouble-free experience provided by his 3Di sails. Coville's achievement was later surpassed by François Gabart in 2017, who also relied on North Sails 3Di for his record-breaking circumnavigation. Gabart emphasized the importance of North's investment in research and development to create a material that was strong, light, and durable, while also acknowledging the collaborative teamwork between sailing, design, and manufacturing.
Today, North Sails continues to deliver top-quality products, driven by a company culture centered around science-based innovation. The company's unique approach encompasses all aspects of sail design and manufacturing, with a global network of expert designers and manufacturing teams collaborating on diverse projects. The exchange of ideas and insights between different projects, ranging from adventure sailing to AC75 racing, enables cross-pollination and ensures consistent excellence throughout the company.
North Sails maintains its commitment to high standards through the expertise of local loft professionals, renowned sail designers, and dedicated manufacturing facilities in Minden, Nevada, and Sri Lanka. This dedication to quality and innovation is ingrained in the fabric of North Sails, ensuring that customers can always expect the finest products backed by cutting-edge research and development.
