About openLCA

The concept for the openLCA project and software took shape in 2006 through collaborative discussions involving Andreas Ciroth, Michael Srocka, and Jutta Hildenbrand. Their vision was straightforward yet multifaceted:

Develop a robust, modular framework for sustainability assessment and life cycle modeling, featuring speed, reliability, and flexibility in both sophisticated and simple models, utilizing widely accessible Open Source software. Cultivate a thriving programming community to contribute to the project's evolution. Establish an array of modules for the framework, empowering users to customize and expand functionality according to their needs. The overarching goal was to democratize access to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and associated methodologies, thereby catalyzing innovation across various domains such as science, education, training, and peer-review. By making the source code freely available, the project aimed to promote transparency and foster collaboration while upholding coding standards and facilitating user-driven modifications and enhancements.

Since its inception, GreenDelta in Berlin has been exclusively managing the openLCA project, with a dedicated development team operating within the organization. Over time, the project has garnered significant public interest and engagement, supported by external funding consortiums, research initiatives, and industry partnerships.

Presently, the project is transitioning into a dynamic network encompassing partners, contributors, supporters, and a diverse user community. The openLCA framework and format converter are released under the Mozilla Public License (MPL 2.0), reflecting the project's commitment to openness and accessibility. For further clarification on licensing or any inquiries, interested parties are encouraged to reach out to the project team.
