Packaging Recovery Organisation Europe
PRO Europe, also known as PRO-Europe Packaging Recovery Organization, is an international umbrella organization representing packaging recovery and recycling systems across Europe. It was founded in 1995 with the aim of promoting and advancing packaging waste recovery and recycling initiatives in Europe.
PRO Europe works with and supports national packaging recovery organizations (PROs) in European countries. These PROs are responsible for implementing and managing extended producer responsibility (EPR) systems for packaging waste in their respective countries. EPR is a policy approach that holds producers accountable for the end-of-life management of their products and packaging.
The main focus of PRO Europe is to facilitate the exchange of information, expertise, and best practices among its member organizations. By fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing, PRO Europe aims to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of packaging recovery and recycling systems across Europe.
The organization actively engages with stakeholders, including governments, industry associations, environmental organizations, and recycling industry stakeholders. PRO Europe advocates for policies and regulations that promote sustainable packaging practices, waste reduction, and the circular economy.
PRO Europe also participates in discussions and initiatives at the European Union (EU) level, providing input and expertise on topics related to packaging waste management and recycling. The organization works to ensure that EU policies and directives align with the goals of the packaging recovery and recycling systems it represents.
Through its activities, PRO Europe seeks to contribute to the achievement of EU recycling targets and the transition to a more sustainable and resource-efficient packaging industry in Europe. The organization promotes the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle, and advocates for innovative solutions and technologies that support a circular economy for packaging materials.
