Urban Institute

The Urban Institute is a Washington, D.C.–based nonprofit think tank founded in 1968 that conducts research on economic and social policy with the goal of improving public policy, strengthening communities, and expanding opportunities for all people. By collecting and analyzing data, evaluating programs, and developing evidence-based solutions, the institute addresses complex challenges in areas such as equity, health, housing, education, work, taxation, income support, and justice. Its mission is to reduce hardship for vulnerable populations, expand opportunity, and enhance the fiscal health and effectiveness of government. To achieve this, the Urban Institute conducts rigorous research, offers technical assistance, and shares its findings widely with policymakers, program administrators, academics, businesses, and the public. Although it was founded at a time of social and political upheaval to focus on urban issues, the institute has since broadened its scope to include a wide range of social and economic policy challenges both within the United States and abroad. Today, its work spans all 50 states and extends to international projects in multiple countries. The Urban Institute is funded through a mix of government contracts, foundation grants, and private donations. With its longstanding reputation for objective, data-driven analysis, it continues to serve as a vital resource for evidence-based policymaking.
