About CAN SUMOI

Owner : Pepe Raventos (Winemaker, Owner) The name Raventós is best known as the creator of sparkling wine in Spain; Raventós i Blanc –direct descendants of Josep Raventós Fatjó– now represents one of the oldest family traditions in the world (winegrowers since 1497); 21 generations of winemakers. Raventós i Blanc are pioneers in animal traction in Spain, and one of the few enclosed estates that only practises biodynamic viticulture. We are very proud to say that there is no other estate in the world like this, that only produces sparkling wine, and where man, beast and the vines live together in a closed circle. The current generation, that lives at the centre of the estate, is represented by Pepe Raventós. His vision and passion for natural oenology led him to decide that in his garage there would be no place for cars since he wanted to convert it into a space for natural winemaking. He decided to start his small personal project focusing solely on natural wines; his dream was to learn to make wine as it used to be done in the old days. Thus, the wines come from his passion for ancestral viticulture and from the selection of native varieties in unique and different soils. His ambition is to produce authentic and well- balanced wines, allowing the terroir to fully express its intrinsic nature. It is here, following the first two harvests of his personal project (Natural Wines by Pepe Raventós; Mas del Serral) that Can Sumoi was born. His obsession led him to look for a farm, vineyards where he can grow grapes for a larger project of natural wines beyond limited editions, but still being very strict about natural winemaking. And so, this new project, which will shortly release its second vintage, gives its name to the farm Can Sumoi. A biodynamic farm that has existed since 1645; located 600 metres above sea level, with local varieties and a source of unique soils. At the heart of the Penedés region, on a terrace that culminates with the Coll de les Ventoses, a high point 600 metres above sea level; surrounded to the east by the Mediterranean Sea, to the north by the Serra de Marmellar, to the west by the Serra del Montmell and to the south by the Serra de l’Home. This is where we find Can Sumoi, an estate that dates back to 1645 and stands out due to the solitude of the surrounding landscape, the mineral nakedness of its soils and its unique geology. Can Sumoi has a main winery and three farmhouses dating back to the end of the 17th century where wine used to be made, a house for the tenant farmers, a poultry yard, 20 hectares of vineyard planted with Parellada and Sumoll and 380 hectares of woodland. The soils of the estate were developed from copper-coloured, ochre and brown material which corresponds to the Montmell Formation, which is made up of sediment formed between 100 and 113 million years ago in the Cretaceous period; there are few soils as ancient as these on the Iberian Peninsula. Our winemaking passion brought us to Can Sumoi, to make natural wines with a birthplace and accompany them on their pathway by obtaining a true reflection of the land where they were born: a 600-metre-high hill looking out over the Mediterranean: the Serra de l’Home. We reinstated the biodynamic farm that had existed on Can Sumoi since 1645 and we make high-altitude natural wines which the least possible intervention in the processes of viticulture and wine-making.
